LGBTQIA+ is an inclusive umbrella acronym that stands for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual/Aromantic. The “+” represents the vast spectrum of other gender identities and sexual orientations not explicitly covered by the letters.
L (Lesbian): A woman who is romantically or sexually attracted to other women
G (Gay): A person who is romantically or sexually attracted to people of the same gender. It is commonly used to refer to men, but can be used by anyone.
B (Bisexual): Someone who is attracted to more than one gender.
T (Transgender): Describes a person whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth.
Q (Queer / Questioning): Queer is an umbrella term for sexual and gender minorities who aren’t heterosexual or cisgender. Questioning is the process of exploring one’s own sexual orientation or gender identity.
I (Intersex): An umbrella term for natural variations in sex characteristics (such as chromosomes, anatomy, or hormones) that do not fit typical binary notions of male or female bodies.
A (Asexual / Aromantic / Agender): Asexual refers to someone with little or no sexual attraction to others. Aromantic refers to someone with little or no romantic attraction, while Agender means not identifying with any gender.
+ (Plus): Acknowledges and encompasses all other identities and orientations, such as pansexual, non-binary, or gender fluid.
